About the Album
Natural Surreality is an exploration into the fusion
between jazz, pop and ambient music. This is not the electronic, fast-paced fusion
that you might remember from the '70s. Rather, this is a new organic jazz fusion,
with evocative and stretching soundscapes that appeal to the listener while promising
much more below the surface.
The songs vary in mood—sometimes reverent, sometimes playful,
sometimes reflective and oftentimes spiritual. There are updated
jazz standards as well as freshly
reinterpreted pop songs—some well-known and some personal favorites.
In addition, there are four original songs on the album: "Undertide," "December Light,"
"Black Unicorn" and "Leaning Straight."
There is something here for everyone—jazz lovers, pop lovers, casual listeners and
music aficionados alike. A first-rate cast of local
Annapolis/Baltimore-area musicians also contributed their musical talent and ideas to
this project, including: Rob Levit (guitar), Frank Russo (drums), Amy Shook (acoustic bass),
Max Murray (acoustic bass) and Ben Frock (flugelhorn). Jeff Gruber, of Blue House Productions
in Silver Spring, recorded, mastered and co-produced the effort.
Jennifer dedicates this effort to all those who, like her, are reaching
for a broader understanding of music and of their own personal journey. Most especially,
she dedicates this effort to Pam Bricker, her late vocal teacher and mentor.
She is dearly missed.
