And now, let’s expand our view a bit, shall we?–and learn a bit more about the fiery and expansive sign of Sagittarius.

Sagittarius

 

Scorpio may win the prize of “deepest sign” (were there one ;-)), but Sagittarius is all about the highest, and most all-encompassing, view.  Sagittarius is associated with higher education, faith, philosophy, law AND foreign travel.  From the perspective of the Archer, it’s not enough to simply plunge down into the depths–we need to come back up and SHARE our findings with the world.  AND, if we really want to enjoy a life of fullness and meaning, we all need to learn to take a leap of faith, now and again–really extend ourselves (whether in body, mind or heart) to see things from a new, wider (and wiser) perspective.

Sagittarius believes in the power of choice, and that we all have a clear moral/instinctual compass that we can follow–aligning us straight from the mind, to the gut, to those moving feet–IF we take the chance to trust, embody the truth and take a leap!  From a Sagittariun perspective, NOT all options are the same–remember that Sagittarius is the complementary/polar opposite of curious Gemini ;-)–and there really is ONE option, in every moment, that will help us to live a more faith-filled life, in alignment with our beliefs and “calling” (whatever that may be).

 

What drives the Sagittarian mind & heart (the larger view)

Sagittarius is ruled by the planet Jupiter–the largest planet in the solar system, and considered by the ancients to be “king of the Gods” (no small claim!).  The God Jupiter was the law giver for all beings, and protector of the Gods–and so, if any of the gods “had beef” with an earthly or heavenly situation, they would turn to him.  And, he would have the final say in what the “letter of the law” would be.  (As good natured as the god Jupiter was, though, he could also be ruled by his own impulses and appetite–as evidenced by his fondness for women of all types, NOT just his wife, Juno. . . Interestingly, the planet Jupiter has 67 confirmed moons–intriguing with the moon being a feminine symbol.)

Also classically considered to be the “Great Benefic”, Jupiter is the bringer of good fortune, as well as opportunity and growth.  It is said (and I have observed) that whatever Jupiter touches is expanded–literally that aspect of one’s life becomes so highlighted that it becomes “larger than life” and we feel compelled to respond and expand, in turn.  (We may, however, over-estimate our capacity to maintain such an expanded way of being–a downside that I will discuss later.)

So, in summary, the sign Sagittarius does carry many of the meanings and attributes of the God Jupiter–namely, the abilitity to see a larger perspective, the good natured comraderie with a broad range of people, the ability to take a stand and make a leap of faith, when needed/desired. . . And the tendency to sometimes make said leap a bit prematurely, based on over-confidence of one’s view, prowess or abilities.

 

The Downside of Sagittarius

Alright, I’ll admit that it does seem a little strange to say that the sign with the highest view and nature does have a “downside”. . . But, nonetheless, we all have faults and foibles, as humans (and even as Gods–read those Greek/Roman tales), so it’s probably best to acknowledge them.

Basically, the “downside” of Sagittarius, and of Jupiter in general, is the tendency to overreach.  Sometimes, for these folks, a pronouncement of faith or commitment is MORE real than the actually, real-world, embodied follow-through.  (Ouch! I know–I said it.)  So, they need to make sure that they’re not over-extending, over-pronouncing, over-stimulating. . .  Basically that they’re not “getting caught up in their own hype.” (Sagittarius IS a fire sign, after all, and a mutable one, at that–thus open to persuasion and mutation when they get “fired up”.)

Also, interestingly enough, I have read (and seen) that Sagittarian folks CAN be prone to depression and disappointment, precisely BECAUSE they do have such optimism and high-reaching expectations. . . It’s a long fall from the heavens, after all! So, some prudence or moderation in one’s approach, even when well-intentioned, can be helpful.
